Classroom-based Planning and Assessment Incorporating the Canadian Language Benchmarks!!

Course Summary Description:
This 10 week on-line course is part of the Post-TESL Certificate Training (PTCT) for TESL Ontario. The course is designed for ESL teachers who want to increase their classroom planning and assessment skills in programs that use the CLB. The first part of the course will focus on the planning process and explore some of the key assumptions and implications of using the CLB for planning. The second part of the course will explore assessment for learning approaches and practices as they apply to the assessment of writing, speaking, listening and reading tasks. Participants should have access to students in order to pilot assessment tasks with learners. The course will include readings, short videos, reflection, discussions and partner activities.
Pre-requisite Skills:

  • Completion of a TESL Ontario certificate from a TESL Ontario accredited institution or have TESL Ontario accreditation (or equivalent)
  • All participants must have a minimum of 600 hours of experience teaching adults in government-funded language training programs
  • Participants should be familiar with the CLB competency framework and have experience using the framework in their classroom planning

Length: 10 weeks

Pre-registration: Preference will be given to PTCT eligible instructors who pre-registered until one week before the start of the course. A limited number of seats will be available to teachers from other regions who meet the course pre-requisites. This course has been accredited by TESL Ontario.
