WLA Pre-Screener

CCLB continued to work with both the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship, Immigration and International Trade (MCIIT) and Employment Ontario sites to set up WLA pre-screener training, with one final session held in the fall. In total, 350 participants have been trained in this tool. A survey for these participants was circulated to gain perspective on how participants have been finding the tool since the training. Furthermore, CCLB has been developing CanDo statements specifically targeted for employment.

The WLA Pre-Screening Tool is a CLB-referenced 30-minute screening tool to help employment counselors estimate the general English-language abilities of clients whose first language is not English. It is designed to be useful for non-TESL professionals. The tool gives a general indication of whether the client’s CLB levels are above or below CLB 6. It is intended to be used, along with other resources, to help counselors and clients make decisions about appropriate next steps when English language abilities are a consideration. Pathways may include:

  • Full language assessment
  • Bridge-to-work programs
  • Post-secondary education
  • Support to pass accreditation test
  • Employment
