Canadian Language Benchmarking of the Red Seal Trades

Project Description

The Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks is leading a national team with considerable expertise in the language benchmarking of occupations and technical training programs and the development of Occupational Language Analysis, with the main goal of measuring and assessing the language competency levels needed for English as a second Language (ESL) and French as a Second Language (FSL), in order to work in the Red Seal Trades.

This work will be carried out over 2 years, beginning in 2007-2008 with 10 Red Seal Trades, and continuing in 2008-2009 with an additional 10-12 Red Seal Trades.

Key objectives for 2007-2008

  • To benchmark 10 Red Seal Trades in both official languages, using the Canadian Language Benchmarks 2000 and Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens 2006 national standards, resulting in:
                              * reports on the CLB levels necessary to work in the Red Seal trades
                              * reports on the CLB levels necessary to write the Red Seal Exams
                              * feasibility study into the CLB levels necessary for success in technical training
  • To develop Occupational Language Analyses (OLAs) in both official languages, based on language benchmarking analysis of Essential Skill Profiles (ESP) and National Occupational Analyses (NOA) for each Red Seal Trade
