Expanded Training for Employment Counselors in the Use of the Workplace Language Assessment Screening Tool

Project Description

The WLA Screening Tool was developed for counselors in organizations offering employment counseling to newcomers to Canada. It is to assist counselors in making appropriate referrals of clients to centers where they can receive language assessments and placements into language training programs. Using the WLA Screening tool, counselors will be able to refer clients who demonstrate readiness to take the full WLA. The WLA assesses English language proficiency at CLB levels 7 -10 and is appropriate for placement of higher-level clients into workplace-related training programs.

The CCLB originally developed a 3-hour training program for counselors in how to use the screening tool. While the feedback from two Toronto-area pilots was very positive, participants indicated a need for more information and more time to prepare to use the screening tool. The revised training package will result in an expanded training program and additional training materials for employment counselors.

The expanded training in the WLA Screening Tool is being developed with funding from the Governments of Ontario and Alberta.
