Sample CLB Lesson Plans

These lesson plans were compiled as part of a cross-Canada project. ESL teachers submit samples of successful lesson plans for learners at Stages 1 and 2 of the CLB (CLB 1 –8). These lessons outline ideas for activities and tasks to help learners develop CLB competencies in all four skills.

How were the Sample CLB Lesson Plans selected?

The sample lesson plans were selected according to how well they demonstrate the following:

  • use of CLB to establish appropriate learning outcomes for learners
  • use of themes and topics relevant to adult learners’ needs
  • selection of realistic and meaningful tasks for adult learners
  • focus on Canadian content and themes
  • integration of all four language skills in lesson planning
  • use of both skill-building and real world tasks
  • reflection of functional, linguistic, textual, socio-linguistic and strategic language items and use in the tasks
  • sequencing tasks to help learners better achieve the outcomes
  • use of community contact task ideas for language use outside the classroom

Learn more about using the CLB as a framework for lesson planning from the Canadian Language Benchmarks 2000: A guide to Implementation. Chapter 6 includes ideas and examples of lessons based on CLB, along with suggestions for further readings.

It is our hope that these samples provide a useful springboard for developing task-based lessons for your learners using the CLB as your reference.

As you use the CLB Sample Lesson Plans, you may also wish to refer to the CLB 2000: A Guide to Implementation (Chapter 6) for a very comprehensive, in-depth approach to using CLB to develop task-based lessons.
